PlayFestival is an annual event that happens once a year which features new and seasoned Playwrights from all over Hawai’i. This is where the culmination of their hard work pays off. A showcase of their finished plays & stories performed in front of friends, family and fans of all things theatre. I was invited to shoot all three nights which was held at Kumu Kuhua theatre. I had no idea what I was in for in terms of lighting, so I went in fully armed with a flurry of lenses and camera bodies.
Let me tell you- and I thought shooting metal shows in dimly lit dive bars was hard. With the stadium seating at Kumu Kuhua I was forced to hug the sidelines of the staircase next to the audience. Every step I took up and down those stairs squeaked. And in the dead silence of the theatre I might as well have thrown symbols down those stairs the way the audience glared at me. From that moment I went into photo ninja mode tip, toeing around and carefully reaching over that one squeaky stair doing my best to not tumble down on to the stage.
Overall, it was an amazing and inspiring event to witness and capture. The stories varied from hilarious to contemplative, from deep to teary eyed. It was a great and challenging few nights of shooting with so many darn talented and animated folks in one room. Support your local theaters and show these guys and gals some love for all their hard work. Visit Playbuilders of Hawai'i & Kumu Kuhua theater if you’re in the downtown Oahu area. You won’t regret it.
